Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve Survey The main presentation for Friday 7th August 2009 will be an exciting and informative evening for all. Gary Moores and Kwai Chang Kum, ANGFAs version of the Leyland Brothers, will present the findings of a recent survey of the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve. The Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve (SIWR) is located on Queensland’s Cape York Peninsula around 60 kilometres north-east of Weipa. The reserve is located on the former “Bertiehaugh” Pastoral Station and has been developed as a tribute to the life and conservation work of Australia’s Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin. The reserve covers 135,000 hectares and is owned and managed by the Terri Irwin Family Trust as a strict nature reserve and in line with international conservation guidelines. Located predominantly within the rich species diversity Wenlock River Drainage, Gary, Kwai, Leo and Bob were able to catch and record over 40 species of fish representing 22 different families in 8 days. Three species were recorded for the first time in the system. Many of the waterways on the property have never been surveyed before including the recently discovered rainforest springs habitat. These springs are at the centre of an international campaign hoping to spare this unique environment from strip mining of bauxite. It is hoped the information Gary and Kwai recorded, together with that from experts from all fields will help to save the area from future mining damage.http://www.savestevesplace.com/ Like previous talks the presentation will be a visual feast of habitat, fish and reptile photographs as well as valuable scientific data.
DOORS OPEN 7:45pm, MEETING STARTS 8:15pm |
